Going for green

The state horticulturalshow in
central Nuremberg

The City of Nuremberg will host the state horticultural show in 2030 –and will experience tangible change between now and then. At the same time, it will celebrate the 50th anniversary of state horticultural shows in Bavaria.

What the outcome could look like:

“Green, not gray” is the motto, in line with which as much space as possible will be unsealed. Small park-like landscapes offering a variety of leisure and recreation facilities will spring up in the heart of the urban cityscape. These new open spaces and recreational facilities will then be inaugurated at the state horticultural show in 2030 and presented to local citizens as part of a whole summer of festivities.

Unsealing on a large scale is a core theme of the Nuremberg 2030 state horticultural show. Climate change, resilience and sponge city approaches will be key, as will the usability of public space and the mobility transition. The cities of tomorrow will need green oases as a climate-friendly, biological and poetic complement to traditional urban spaces. That is the central concept propagated by Sinai, Gesellschaft von Landschaftsarchitekten mbh, Berlin, the firm of landscape architects that won the competition for the Stadtgraben (city wall and moat area) with the motto Mehr Grün wagen (“Going for green”).

Why a state horticultural show?

Is this just a flower show for a summer? Far from it! Firmly established since 1980 as a tool of green design in urban spaces, state horticultural shows give a sustainable boost to urban development. Horticultural shows are synonymous with forward-looking urban development that fosters harmony between architecture and ecology. The opening date for the summer-long inaugural festivities for the new, high-quality open spaces has already been set, and this alone is already accelerating many urban development projects. Both funding and resources are being bundled with a sharper focus. Since the first Bavarian state horticultural show in 1980, a total of nearly 550 hectares of land – equivalent to about 760 football pitches – have been freshly greened and upgraded. More than 25 million people have visited these shows in Bavaria. So, yes, it will be a festival for a summer – but also an investment for generations.

Landesgartenschau
Nürnberg 2030 GmbH

The City of Nuremberg has joined with Bayerische LandesgartenschauGmbH (ByLGS) to establish the nonprofit Landesgartenschau Nürnberg 2030GmbH. The City itself holds a 60 percent stake in this enterprise; ByLGSholds the remaining 40 percent of shares. Chairman of the Supervisory Board is Marcus König, Lord Mayor of Nuremberg.

Bayerische
Landesgartenschau

Bayerische Landesgartenschau GmbH, ByLGS, will contribute the expertise it has amassed from more than 45 state horticultural shows in Bavaria. It will supply experts in landscape design, green space planning and horticulture to support municipalities, serving as central communication partner to bring together cities, ministries and gardening associations. Municipal authorities normally only once face the highly complex challenge of staging a state horticultural show. Unlike them, Bayerische Landesgartenschau GmbH does nothing else.

Via the agency of the Bavarian State Ministry for the Environment and Health, the Free State of Bavaria supports state horticultural shows by subsidizing the cost of investing in permanent infrastructure up to a maximum of EUR 6 million. Additional money can be sourced from a variety of state funding pools. The municipality will receive a grant of EUR 1 million for the year in which the show itself takes place. Since 1980, the Environment Ministry has made available subsidies of around EUR 80 million.
